Kalutara buddhist society
The Buddhist Culture spanning over centuries in this beautiful island of Sri Lanka adorned a great heritage not only by royal commitment but also for the exemplary characters born from time to time. With the arrival of Portuguese in the year 1505 AD in Sri Lanka and coastal region falling under their control Buddhists began to embrace catholic religion. It is a well-known fact that the Portuguese had two motives: propagation of their religion and the accumulation of wealth. Invading Kalutara, Portuguese had taken over Ganagarma Buddhist temple and built their fortress on the hillock by the river. With the transfer of power from Portuguese to the Dutch and then to the British in subsequent years the fortress on the hillock remained to exist as their treasury and the centre of administration.
With the fall of the Kandyan kingdom in 1815 AD and the country becoming a British crown colony, the political and the administrative structures changed with Sri Lankan involvements supporting the British and also Sri Lankans organizing themselves under national patriot banners. Educational and political policies created new environments and dimensions in major towns and even in rural environments resulting in drawing them towards politics, entrepreneurship, law and justice and many other social streams.
